Demand EPA extend its comment period on One Earth’s carbon storage permits!

The U.S. EPA is one step from approving the injection of 90 million metric tons of CO2 into the recharge area of the Mahomet Aquifer — a federally designated sole-source aquifer that supplies more than 100 communities across 14 counties. That’s enough CO2 to fill more than 120 Empire State Buildings, pumped under pressure beneath our drinking water.

Could it reach the aquifer? We’ve identified five pathways by which it could. Neither One Earth nor EPA has evaluated a single one of them.

Here’s the process EPA is offering:

Ninety minutes of Q&A on three highly technical Class VI permits — for a project that would inject CO2 into three wells for 20 years. There is no presentation of the project. Questions end when the hearing begins, and you’re expected to deliver formal comments on the spot. Written comments close the next day, September 23, at 11:59 p.m. CT. We think that’s unconscionable.

Three years ago, EPA granted a 10-day extension for the Wabash Valley Resources permits in Indiana. We’re asking for exactly the same thing here.

One Earth had years to prepare these permits. We’re being given 90 minutes to evaluate them.
